著者はヨーク大学中世史講座講師。メロヴィング期メッツの定住研究を出発点とするが、英語圏の若手で最も注目すべき初期中世史家の一人。歴史学と考古学双方に見識があり、かつては軍事マニアの関心を引くに過ぎなかった武具や戦術も時代のコンテクストの中に置きなおす「いくさの社会史」へと昇華させる。儀礼行為という観点から類似のテーマを扱うゲルト・アルトホーフよりは対象地域も射程も広い。同じ著者による研究動向整理であり、本書の出発点ともなった

戊辰戦争では、屠った相手の耳を削ぐことで勝利の証拠とした。戦闘行為そのものがほとんどない２００年間を経た江戸時代の末期から明治初期にかけて、近世戦国時代と同様の戦時行為が出現したわけである。これをただ残虐性という言葉で片付けることはできない。
