2000年８月16日から20日まで、デンマークのイェリング近郊ブランビェリ高等専門学校で開催された第５回国際ルーン会議の会議録。会議には80人以上が参加、研究発表36本のうち22本を活字化したもの。知らない名前もあるが、現在世界のルーン研究を牽引している研究者はほとんど見える。英語で統一するのかと思いきや、ドイツ語が２本、なぜかスウェーデン語が１本混じっている。ちなみに大小二つの著名なルーン石碑が屹立するイェリングはユネスコの世界遺産である。

ルーン会議は1980年以来５年に一度開催される。

特にゲッティンゲンで開催された第４回の会議録は素晴らしい。第６回は2005年にイギリスのランカスタ大学で開かれており、近々論集も公刊されるだろう。第７回はオランダが予定されているが、統括者はおそらく初期ルーンに関して画期的な著作を公刊したティーネケ・ルーイジェンハとなるだろう。

大変ありがたいことにルーン研究はウェブ上でも進んでいる。

現在ルーンの刊本を入手することは難しいが、これらのデータベースが完成され、恒久的なオープンソースとなれば、ルーン研究へのアクセスも容易となろう。ただしキール・プロジェクトは解説や文献目録を備えた完全版を冊子媒体で準備しつつある。なお、文献目録も含めたルーン研究の最新情報は毎年オスロで公刊される「Nytt om runer」に掲載される。

さて、一般にはルーン＝呪術用文字というイメージがある。初期ルーンには確かに呪術的役割もあったが、ヴァイキング時代に入る頃にはそのような意味は既にそぎ落とされている。コンテクストの変化は文字機能の変化を促す。ネットでヒットするルーン関係の頁の多くはおどろおどろしさや神秘性を強調したものであるように思うが、学問的には無意味である。フリーメイソン＝陰謀組織やテンプル騎士団＝聖杯の守護者と同様に、研究者レヴェルの検証には耐えない。
