「Journal of English and Germanic Philology」は、英語圏のゲルマン文献学を代表する専門誌。このスペシャル･イシューは、2003年にイリノイ大学で開催された「The State of Medieval Studies」という国際会議で読み上げられた報告を収めている。編者は宮廷研究等で著名。

文献学専門誌だけあって、寄稿者の多くは文献学者である。しかし、Miri RubinとかHans Werner Goetzといった歴史学の大物も混じっている。イントロを読んでも、どういう意図でこのような人選になったのかよくわからない。この雑誌の常習的寄稿者にはスヴェーレ・バッゲもテオドール・アンダーソンもいるのだから、スカンディナヴィアに関する論考も入れてほしかった。

オランダ、スペイン、イタリアの動向は、普段読むことがないだけにありがたい。研究者の増えてきたイタリアやスペインはともかく、日本でオランダの中世史といえば、いまだにホイジンガである。しかし私も、ホイジンガ以外誰かいるのかと言われると、すぐには思いつかない。スルヘル・ファン・バートくらいか。初期中世史で、オランダ出身者でよい研究をする人は少なからずいるが、別にオランダをフィールドとしているわけではない。実はサガやルーン研究にもオランダ語の重要な文献がある。ただ、最近はみな英語で書くようになったので、簡単に手に入るようになった。

頁の最後に面白いデータがあった。この雑誌、平均すると一号当たり1134冊が配送されているようである。機関と個人を合わせてであり、たぶん学術雑誌としては多いのだろうとおもう。『史学雑誌』も同じくらいだろうか。しかし日本の雑誌はいい加減、投稿者を会員のみに限るのをやめてほしい。学生は論文の投稿先を論文のタイプに合わせて探す必要があるが、かといって、毎年５０００円から１００００円もする会費を取られる学会に、６つも７つも入るわけにはいかないのである。

ちなみに、この号は特別号扱いであり、イリノイ大学出版局から特別に購入できる。どういうわけか、私の場合、届くまでに２ヶ月かかった。
