オロシウスの『異端に反駁する歴史』、通称『世界史』は、アルフレッド大王の宮廷で古英語に翻訳されたとされる。その際、オロシウスの原文にない箇所が追加された。ノルウェー人オウッタルとイングランド人ウルフスタンの航路である。この二人は商人である。
オウッタルは唯一同時代の記録が残るヴァイキング時代の商人である。北ノルウェーの出身とされ、ロシアの白海からデンマークのヘゼビューまで航海している。なぜ彼がロシア白海まででかけたのかといえば、その周辺が奴隷と並ぶヴァイキング時代最大の輸出商品たる毛皮と海獣の原産地だからであり、しかるに彼は中継貿易をおこなっているわけである。かほどに興味深い存在でありながら、本書が出るまでこれといった歴史学者の研究はなかった。私の手元にある昔の論考も文献学的なモノばかり。もちろんそれはそれでとても価値のあるものなのだけれど。
オウッタルの記録など古英語でたかだか数ページである。それに対して各執筆人はかなりの枚数を使って、ありとあらゆる角度からこのテクストを分析する。とりわけ情報の少ない初期中世において、地名と民族名の正確な意味を知ることは重要である。しかし本書の執筆人は豪華である。ベイトリーやソーヤーなんて引退して久しいと思っていたが。
ちかじかこの続編で、ウルフスタンの論集も出るらしい。
