編者をまったく知らなかったので気に留めていなかったが、よく見ると初期中世の三人は中堅のエースたち。ざっと目を通したところ、他の章もよくできていました。わたしが書き手を知らないだけでした。文献目録も文献紹介もしっかりしているので、初学者や専門以外の分野を知りたい人にはうってつけであろう。まだハードカバーしかないけど、このシリーズはいずれペーパーに落ちる。

ビザンツなどもそうだが、近ごろこの手のハンドブックが流行っているようである。英語で書けば世界中の図書館からの購入が見込めるし、部数が出るので安価にもなる。英語帝国主義かもしれないが、この流れはいかんともしがたい。もちろん歴史は基本的に国史なので、重要なモノグラフはあいかわらず現地の言葉で出るんだが。

最終章でムーアは、ユーラシア史のなかのヨーロッパを論じる。歴史叙述の中の中世を回顧するのだが、やや歴史哲学じみたところのある大まかな叙述で（ムーアは立派な歴史家だが）、わたしには具体的な事例を提示しながらユーラシア世界の中のヨーロッパを浮かび上がらせる佐藤や杉山の見方のほうがしっくりときた。わたしの頭が抽象化した議論になれてないこともあるだろうが、歴史学は具体的な事例から考えるべき学問なので、なんらかの事例がほしいのである。いずれにせよ、今後書かれるべき中世ヨーロッパ世界の通史は、ユーラシア、アフリカ、新大陸との関係の中で浮かび上がるヨーロッパ半島になるのではないかという気がする。さはいえ、ヨーロッパ中世を論じるのであれば、結局はヨーロッパ中世の独自性をどうにかして前に出さねばならない。これが難しいのだけれども。

姉妹編で古代末期のものも出ている。目次と書き手から察するに、初期中世に関心のある向きには、こちらのほうが有用かも。
