この人がコカコーラをよく買っていた。「好きなんか？」と聞くと、「友人のスティーブン・ホワイトの奉職先の大学のスポンサーだから買ってる」という。フーンと思ってわたしも赤間神社の自販機で買い「スティーブン・ホワイトのために」と言っていっしょに飲んだ。コーラなど普段飲みつけないので気持ち悪かった。スティーブン・ホワイトは、本論集の寄稿者中唯一の歴史家である。ホワイト以外はすべて美術史家。邦訳のあるキャヴィネスも寄稿している。いくつかのシンポジウムで報告された原稿を集めた論集である。

バイユーのタペストリを知らない人はいないと思うが、万が一知らない人はこちらをどうぞ。全長７０メートルの織物で、現在フランス・ノルマンディーはバイユー市の博物館に収められている。私の手元には、フランク・ステントン（1965）、Ｄ・Ｍ・ウィルソン（1985）、リュシアン・ミュッセ（1995）による別々の刊本がある。三人とも大学者であり、解説は傾聴に値する。その上で本論集に目を落とすと、ずいぶん研究も様変わりしたのだなと思った。つまりかつてのように図像分析ではなく（もちろんそうした分析もまだ継続中であるが）、モノとしての織物に注目するようになってきている。縫い方だの裏地だの、歴史家ではなく、服飾史の範疇である。

バイユーのタペストリで昔から気になっている絵がある。ウィルソンの版でいえばplate17であるが、このエルフギヴァを描いた図像の下欄に相撲取りのような身振りをしたおっさんの絵がある。…素っ裸で放り出しているんだけどな。

昨年の７月にブリティッシュ・ミュージアムでバイユー・タペストリに関するBT@BT（つまりBayeux Tapestry at the British Museum）というくだけた名前のシンポジウムが開催された。報告者の一人が「もう原稿も出した」というので多分本書だろうと思って購入したのだが、ない。ボツにでもなったかと思ったが、シンポ報告者に名を連ねる著名な歴史家の論文も全く掲載されていない。ということはもう一冊、おそらく歴史家だけのバイユー論集が出るはずである。
