中世史家による最新のキリストの母ちゃん論。著者はケンブリッジ大学の中世キリスト教社会史の権威であり、『ケンブリッジ版キリスト教史』第４巻（中世後期）の編者でもある（初期中世の３巻に比べるとページ数がやけに少ない）。ケンブリッジには、彼女のほかに、ロザモンド・マッキッタリック、エリザベス・ヴァン・ハウツ、アン・アブラフィア、ノラ・ベレンドといったような女性中世史家が在籍する。なお、ルビン、アブラフィア、ベレンドはユダヤ教徒である。

マリアについて聖書に書かれていることは必ずしも多くない。にもかかわらず、中世を通じてマリアに奉献された教会はおそらく最も多い。これは中世においていかにマリアの人気が高かったかを示すものであるが、しかしながらその人気は時代によって変化したことを歴史学はわたしたちに教えてくれる。つまり初期中世は必ずしも聖人としてのマリアに対する人気は高くなく、むしろその地方独特の聖人のほうが崇敬対象としては一般的であった。その流れが変化するのは、本書の第３部で論じられるように、１２世紀である。もっとも著名なのはクレルヴォーのベルナールの思想であろうが、彼のみならず、マリアに対する訴えかけは中世社会に広まっていたようである。このあたりの議論は、キャロライン・バイナムが独走している。

著者も明言しているように、本書は学際を志向したものである。学際と言っても、カルチュラル・スタディーズのような訳のわからないものではなく、文学とか音楽学とか典礼学とか美術史学というような、文献学という共通の土台のある専門からの情報摂取である。とくに第４章。

日本語で読める聖母に関する本は必ずしも少なくない。少なくとも次の二冊は中世史家とキリスト教史家によるもので、学術的価値が非常に高い。必読。ただし絶版なので、古書店か図書館で入手する必要がある。

なお本書も、バートレット、ウィッカム、ヴァイキング本と同じくペンギン・ブックスの一つ。幅広い読者層を想定しているため、最新の専門的知識を盛り込みながらもリーダブルである。小学館とか講談社とか中央公論社とか新潮社とか、そういった大手が、仕事のトロい学者ではなくきちんとした翻訳家にお願いして日本語版にしてもらうような、そんな本である。…一般向けの本であっても、注は絶対落としてはいけません。
