イタリア人執筆陣を率いるのはAndrea GamberiniとIsabella Lazzarini。今後のイタリア中世史学界を支えていくであろう中堅どころである。裏表紙の推薦文をものしたのはChris Wickham、David Abulafia、Julius Kirschner。いずれ劣らぬ当代随一の（英語圏の）中世イタリア史家である。それはすなわち、今後何十年かは、本書が、英語圏にとどまることなく世界中でルネサンス期都市国家研究の信頼すべき手引きとして引用され続ける、まさにそのことを保証したことになる。

全体は二部構成。第一部では各都市国家ごとの梗概が、第二部ではルネサンス期都市国家に不可欠のテーマが、結構な分量の文献目録とともに収められている。いずれの章も２０頁前後。事典だと短すぎる、しかし専門書だと長すぎると考える多くの人にとってちょうど良い長さである。

本書の目的はイタリアの研究水準をイタリア外部に紹介することにある。当たり前のことであるが、イタリア史の研究は、少なくともその実証性に限定するならば、イタリアがもっとも水準が高い（ラティウム地方の全体史を描き出しイタリア人中世史家から崇拝のまなざしを受けるかのピエール・トゥベールですら、自分はイタリア人にはまったく及ばない外国人であると言っている）。日本史の研究の本場が日本であるのと同じである。国史を万人がアプローチできる言語で紹介したというこの点だけでも本書の意義はある、しかし結果として、本書は単なる紹介にとどまらない手引きとなった。つまりルネサンス期都市国家すべての政治的歩みを並行的に記述することで、そこに差異と類似を明確にする比較の思考が生まれていることである。おそらくこの点は本書が英語であったが故の成果ではないだろうか。

ルネサンス都市はそれぞれ独自の歴史をもつ。日本では、というよりもむしろどの国においても、ルネサンスと言えば、文芸を中心に都市を判断する。したがって、パトロン活動が盛んなメディチ家のフィレンツェがどうしても前面に出てくるし、そのフィレンツェを持ってしてルネサンス都市と理解する。しかし東地中海から黒海に広がる海洋帝国を築いていたジェノヴァとヴェネツィアは、フランスとスペインというヨーロッパの大国が食指を動かしたミラノやナポリは、そしてイタリア都市国家間のバランサーにして要諦でもあった教皇国家は、フィレンツェで文芸文化が花開いていたその時期にいったいどのような展開を遂げていたのか。もちろんブルクハルトの名著の第一章とてこうした都市国家の動勢を手際よくまとめているが、そうはいっても150年前のテクストである。文芸復興の背景としての都市関係史ではなく、国際政治構造のなかの都市関係史がいま必要とされているのかな、と頁を繰って感じた。
