エストニア出身の研究者による学位論文。ルーン石碑、スカルド詩、サガといった資料から交通に関わるテクストを徹底的に収集している。ジュディス・ジェッシュの研究とやや重なるが、こちらはバルト海に重心がある。

著者はルーン石碑に見えるスカンディナヴィア人による橋の研究をノルウェー語で出版している。

本書に拠れば「橋をつくった」と記すルーン碑文は北欧全体で137例ある。河川や湿地等水系の多い北欧世界で橋をつくるという行為は、築造者が所属する共同体に対する一種の寄進行為であった。ヴァイキング時代の権力構造にとって見逃す事のできない論点であるが、研究は多くない。

ここに挙げた学位論文はＰＤＦで読むこともできるが、印刷にプロテクトがかかっており不便なので、現物を購入する事にした。発行している研究所の秘書がすぐに送ってくれたのだが、エストニアには郵便局から送金する事ができず、結局本の値段の数倍の手数料を払って銀行送金をするはめになった。
