ずいぶんと長く待った。私はアイルランド学に詳しいわけではないが、本書が多分これからの出発点となるのだろう。北欧史に関心のあるものとしてはバインとウォーレスの執筆したいくつかの章が重要となってくる。
ダブリンを初め、アイルランド沿岸部の都市のいくつかはヴァイキングが建設したとされる。史料文言をサーベイしたわけではないのではっきりとはいえないが、大陸やイングランドと異なり、アイルランドには具体的な描写にとんだ年代記があるわけではないので、ヴァイキングの政治的な行為に関してはなかなか再現が難しいようである。ただし編年誌はいくつかあり、そこにはヴァイキングによる略奪活動が簡潔ながらかなり記録されている。
アイリッシュ海はヴァイキング研究にとって大切なポイントである。アイルランド、ウェールズ、マン島、スコットランド西部というスカンディナヴィア人の植民地域に囲繞された地中海、それこそ「我らが海」である。しかし旧来の研究は各地域を別個に見てきたものが多く、アイリッシュ海を一つの舞台と見るのは近年の傾向である。

がある。ヴァイキング期アイルランドの研究といえばまずオコラーンの著書が挙がるが、出る出るといわれ続けた第二版を待って早５年くらいが過ぎようとしている。当初は2000年だか2002年だかといわれていたが、出版社のホームページを見ると2007年になっていた。出版日の延期はこれで最後にしてほしい。
