北欧中世史のスタンダード。執筆者は当該分野のリーディング・スカラーでベテラン。北欧における通説的見解を吸収することができる。このあと、近世編、近代編が出版予定にあがっているが、いつのことになるのだろう。

本書の登場により、北欧語になじみがない者も北欧中世史の概要をつかめるようになった。これまでは、個人による通史としてリュシアン・ミュッセの仏語（1951）、ソーヤー夫妻の英語（1993）、カウフホルトの独語（2000）か、各種ハンドブック類に収録された短めの北欧該当部を参照せざるをえなかった。いずれにせよ中世後期に弱く、その中世後期の情報こそ必要としていた者にとっては、むずがゆく思ったものである。

ただし諸手を挙げて褒め上げるべき内容とはいえない。書評として、

　ヴァイキング時代デンマーク（８章b）の執筆者はインゲではなくニルスにすべきだったと思うが、ニルスは『ケンブリッジ版中世史』第２巻に「ヴァイキング時代」を執筆しているので、重複を避けたのかもしれない。インゲは13世紀のサクソ・グラマティクスのヒストリオグラフィの専門家であり、ヴァイキング時代を専門としない。たしかに師匠であるアクセル・クリステンセンの見解を継承し、ヴァイキング時代に関するいくつかの文章は書いているのだが、それも1980年代までのこと。ヴァイキング時代の研究は遥かに先へと進んでいる。文献学、考古学、地名学、古銭学のような全ての分野をサーヴェイしての通史は不可能だと思うが、残念ながらインゲは一番親近性のあるはずの文献史学の成果すら吸収していない。

北欧史にとって農業史の問題は根幹を占めると思うが、どのようにアプローチしていくべきかまだ見えてこない。大陸では中世初期から見出せる土地の管理台帳のような史料群が、北欧では中世末期のものしか残っておらず、中世盛期以前の農村構造やその支配形態の再現が難しいのである。もちろん、マルク・ブロックがそうであったように、近世以降の手がかりから中世の実態を再現するという事もなされており、それゆえにとりわけノルウェーでは地名学が19世紀以降進展した。とはいえ、その成果が中世前期に反映されるかというと、そうではないだろう。

日本語による北欧中世の通史としては、
百瀬宏・熊野聰・村井誠人編『新版世界各国史21　北欧史』（山川出版社　1998）, 25-128頁

がほぼ唯一。該当部は熊野聰による執筆。また、
熊野聰「スカンディナヴィア（含アイスランド）」佐藤彰一・池上俊一・高山博編『西洋中世史研究入門』（名古屋大学出版会　2000）, 245-51+350-51頁

熊野によるこの論考は、「日本における」北欧中世研究の問題点を露呈しているという点で有益である。日本における北欧中世研究とは「アイスランド（含スカンディナヴィア）」であった。現地における北欧中世史の基礎的文献は、
