極めて良質の論文集。編者の二人は現在イギリスにおけるヴァイキング研究の中心となりつつある。いずれも考古学者だが、ヘイドリは文献史料に十分に配慮した論文もいくつか書いている。

いずれも一般向け。後者はモニュメントに注意を払っていた点が面白かったが、前者は後者との差異をどのように打ち立てるのだろう。歴史家によるスタンダードな通史として、

アングロ・サクソン研究にとってヴァイキングというファクタは不可避であり、この論文集はアップ・トゥ・デイトされた研究現状を伝える。イングランドのヴァイキングという問題をめぐってはもう一つ重要な論文集がある。

こちらは第13回ヴァイキング会議での発表原稿からの選集であるが、考古学者や地名学者の発表が多い。それにくらべて本論集は、初期中世の大陸を専門とするマシュー・イニスやギー・ハルソールの参加からも理解されるように、相対的に文字テクストに注意を払い、寄稿者の問題の立て方がより歴史学的である。したがって私にはこちらのほうがとっつきやすい。文献史料の問題点に立ち入った議論として、

近年の研究動向は社会構造に対する点に関してはステントンの評価を留保している。デーンロー地帯には確かに文化的また政治的な影響はあったかもしれないが、流入したスカンディナヴィア人の数も嘗て言われていたほど多くはなく、また彼らのイングランドへの同化の程度も高かったので、根本的な変化には寄与しなかった、と。編者の一人ヘイドリや、先日来日したデイヴィッド・ロフがそうした見解の主導者である。

しかし私には疑問がある。そもそも９世紀前後のイングランドとデーン人の出自国つまりデンマークとの間にどのような社会構造の差異があったのだろうかと。イングランドの歴史家たちが想定するデンマーク側の社会構造がいまひとつはっきりしないので、どの点がどうと具体的に指摘できないのである。確かにデンマーク側のデータは少なく、農村に限って言えばおそらくユラン中部のヴォバッセくらいしか発掘データがないのではと思う。もちろんそれだけで全てを語ることは困難であるが、そのヴォバッセとデーンローの農村構造を比較した研究を私は見たことがない。私の見落としかもしれないが。

また、法的側面からの貴重な研究として、

浩瀚である。ただし、利用した史料が類似しているせいか、ハートの見解はステントンを踏襲している。地名学と歴史学の安易な連携には、双方の専門家から厳しい批判があるが、歴史家と考古学者が、慎重な利用は歴史学にとって有用であることを論じる好論文として、
