年末年始はゆっくりするものだと相場が決まっているが、できない。とはいえ「忙しい」と口に出して仕事が終わるわけでもないので、淡々と書物のページを繰り、辞書を引き、キーボードをたたく。メールもバンバン入ってくるが、それが気休め。Gyaoで「はじめの一歩」をやっていたので、懐かしくなって視聴した。鷹村さんとの出会いって、そうだったよなあ。本当にどうでもいいことを書いてるな。

本書は、シカゴ大学出版会の記念碑的事業の劈頭を飾る。詳細はこちら。読みたくて、以前研究室に入れたが、円安の影響で、古書で１万円を切っていた。ラッキーと思って注文したが、大部で、送料を結構とられた。

現存する地図の一覧表も併載される本書を読めば、中世地図は十分に概観できる。

地図の歴史を知ったのは、昔、教免に必要な人文地理で、織田武雄の新書を読まされたとき。ＴＯ図とか、マッパ・ムンディとか、ポルトラーノとか。そのときは、地図としての関心で接していたけど、その後、フォン・デン・ブリンケンの著名な論文を読んで、中世の「地図」を、ただ近代的地図と同列に論じることの無意味さを知った。中世地図の中には、中世的世界像、つまり中世人の時間観念と空間観念が、深く深く組み込まれている。それは、より具体的に、本書の執筆者の一人ハーヴィのヘレフォード図研究や、アルミン・ヴォルフのエプシュトルフ図研究を参観すれば、明らかである。

現在、斯界を牽引するのは、フランス国立研究院のパトリック・ゴーティエ＝ダルシェ。日本語でも一本読める。

彼が監修する「Terrarvm orbis」というシリーズは、主として、マッパムンディを対象とする野心的な研究叢書である。これもその一冊。

一度講義で、中世の世界認識論とかやっちゃろうとおもって資料を集めているが、まだうまく筋の通った見解は出せない。単なる紹介なら簡単なんだけどね。まずは、ブレーメンのアダムとオラウス・マグヌスを検討してから。この二人の北欧に対する空間認識論、研究がありそうでいてまるでない。中世北欧の空間認識論は、史料の数もそこそこ限られているし、一つの大きなテーマなんだけど、だれもやらん。ラテン語、アイスランド語、北欧語、ドイツ語が扱えれば、いいネタなんだけどねえ。
