ケンブリッジお得意の叢書シリーズ。全９巻。中世は、コンスタンティヌスから600年までを扱う２巻、初期中世の本巻、盛期から後期中世の４巻、東方教会の５巻である。今年夏予定されている４巻以外はすでに出ている。大部で高価（といってもいまアマゾンで一冊１万５千円。研究費のある人は余裕でしょう。私はケンブリッジ出版会アジア支部のあるシンガポールから直接取り寄せました）なので個人で買うものではないが、この巻は執筆メンバーを見て買った。ビブリオもしっかりしているし、多分今後キリスト教史の最重要レファレンスになると思う。

個人的に使ってみた感じで言えば、今日本で最も使いやすいキリスト教史は、平凡社ライブラリーのやつか、山川の世界宗教史叢書の三巻本である（これはいま新版を作成中）。前者は網羅的、後者は選択的。大学の講義準備程度なら、後者のほうが錯綜しなくて便利。ただ東方教会に関しては、森安達也のまとめた後者のほうがよい。しかしながら、このケンブリッジ版に目を通してみると、隔世の感がある。単なる通史部分は最小限に抑え、キリスト教社会の形成にとって重要と思われる様々な側面に、問題史的なアプローチをとっている。そもそも本巻は、イントロをピーター・ブラウン、結論をジョン・ヴァン・エンゲンという、英語圏で考えられる限り最高の人材が筆をとっている。ヴァン・エンゲンを知らない人がいるかもしれないが、彼は"The Christian Middle Ages as an historiographical problem." American Historical Review 91（1986）, pp. 519-52という、中世キリスト教に関心を持つものは絶対に読まなければならない論文を書いている。

とはいえ、三分の一くらいの執筆者を知らない。もう三分の一はおなじみで、残り三分の一は外国からの傭兵。アンゲネント、パラッツォ、ロブリション、ブーローらは、名ばかり高かったが、ドイツ語やフランス語以外で書くことが比較的少なかったので、英語以外知りませんという方には彼らの議論を知るよい機会なのかもしれない。編者の一人のジュリア・スミスはとてもよくできる方。本書の翻訳は絶対に出ないと思うけど、日本のキリスト教史も本叢書の議論が最低限の共通理解になれば、愉しい世界になるのだと思う。信仰としてのキリスト教史ではなく、歴史学としてのキリスト教史。
