Giles Constable

《経歴》
1929年ロンドン生まれ。1957年、ハーヴァート・ブロックの指導のもと、ハーヴァード大学で博士号を取得、1966年から77年までヘンリ・チャールズ・リー中世史講座教授として母校で教鞭をとる。1977年より85年まで教授職を継続するとともに、ワシントンにある同大学付属ダンバートン・オークス研究図書館の所長も兼務し、1985年から2003年までプリンストン高等研究院歴史研究部門の教授職にあった。

中世修道院研究の確立者であるジャン・ルクレール、カッシウス・ハリンガー、デイヴィド・ノールズの同僚にしてその衣鉢を継ぐ。自らが校訂した尊者ペトルスの書簡をしばしば引用し、クリュニー閨修道院に留まらず、十字軍史やビザンツ史にも膨大な研究足跡を残す。1985年にコンスタブル教授が就任したプリンストン高等研究院の初代講座主は亡命研究者であるエルンスト・カントーロヴィチであった。イェール大学教授であった故ジョン・ボズウェル（1947-94）や現在プリンストン高等研究院の講座を継承するキャロライン・バイナム（1941-）らを育てる。

徹底した先行研究の消化と俯瞰的分析。英語そのものは読みやすい。本人は教育は全てアメリカで受けたと言っていた。

彼の娘も中世史家である。プリンストン大学で博士号を取得し、現在はノートルダム大学の教授。

九州大学での講演は1996年の著作の、京都大学でのそれは1995年の著作第１部の要約である。東京大学での講演はまだ出版されていなかったオリジナルな内容であるが、コンスタブル教授は日本に立ち寄ったその足で北欧に向かい、同内容をフィンランドのユヴァスキュラで開催された第３回中世研究ヨーロッパ会議で発表している。注釈をつけた最終ヴァージョンは2006年に公刊された会議録に掲載。
