編者は見慣れない名前だと思ったが、調べると初期中世教皇庁の歴史記述を専門としていることがわかった。「コルプス・クリスティアノールム」にアグネッルスの教皇史の編纂で参加している。

初期中世史にとって重要な史料の割にあまり触れられる事がないので、この編纂を機に再検討されてほしい。本編著の姉妹編として古代末期バージョンもある。初期中世に関心あるものとしてはこちらも必見。

こうなるとルネサンスのものもありそうだが、見つけることができない。

中世に歴史書は数多くあり、それぞれに多くの校訂、翻訳、注釈、研究がある。その全てを読み解くことはまず不可能で、自分の関心にしたがって取捨選択する必要がある。北欧の歴史記述といえば、サクソ『デーン人の事績』とスノッリ『ヘイムスクリングラ』が二大巨頭となる。写本レヴェルからの徹底性を追及すれば、この二つの分析だけで一生が終わってしまう。ということで少なくとも私はやらない。

かつて中世の歴史叙述といえば次の三冊と相場が決まっていた。今でも邦訳する価値はあると思うが、なかなか難儀である。

歴史叙述に関しては日本語でもいくつか本が出ているが、総括的なものとして、
兼岩正夫『西洋中世の歴史家　その理想主義と写実主義』（東海大学出版会　1964）, 220頁

著者（1911-84）は教え子とともにトゥールのグレゴリウスを邦訳した。テクストの内容というよりもテクストが生成する過程に注目したのが名古屋大学ＣＯＥ「テクスト科学の構築」であり、その成果として、
佐藤彰一『歴史書を読む　 『歴史十書』のテクスト科学』（山川出版社　2004）, 180頁

ブリル（とワルター・デ・グリューター）の本は個人購入用に値段が設定されているとは思えないので、しばしば図書館にお願いする。きちんとペーパーバックを用意するオックスフォードＵＰやケンブリッジＵＰ、専門性は高いのにそもそもの値段設定が安いブレポルスを見習ってほしい。
