「ゲルマン民族の大移動」は高校生で学ぶ。しかしながら、この時代を概観できる日本語の参考書は、ピエール・リシェの新書一冊しかない。

こんな貧しい状況は日本だけで、蛮族に侵入された国々では大変研究が盛り上がっている。その牽引者のひとりがこのギー・ハルソールである。前にも一冊取り上げた。本書ではまえがきに痛々しい告白がある。『ゴシック世界の思想像』では、あとがきに私的なことは書かねーとかいって名前を挙げた謝辞すらないけれど、自己をさらけ出すのと抑えるのとどっちがいいのでしょう。読者としては前者のほうが面白いけど。

学部用の教科書なので基本事項はおさえてある。かといってだらだらと事実を羅列しているわけではなく、特に第三部では民族移動期の変動を構造的にとらえようとしている。初期中世史家が大好きなエスニック・アイデンティティのお話がベース。ちなみにこの５００ページ強の教科書にあって北欧に割かれたページはわずか５頁。これはハルソールが北欧語を読めないということもあるが、彼の理解では、他の地域では容易に入手できる概観のようなものが、北欧に限ってはないかららしい。確かにそれはごもっともで、この時代の総説を「Cambridge History of Scandinavia」ではビョルン・ミューレが、「New Cambridge Medieval History」ではロッテ・ヘゼアガーが担当しているが、歴史家からすれば決して満足のいく出来とは言い難い。いつまでたっても北欧はお荷物である。ゴート人の出生地に擬せられるくらいだから、初期中世での北欧の位置は無視できないんだけど。
