ヴァイキングに関心のある方はすぐにアマゾンを開きましょう。ヴァイキング世界を知るための、最良の手引きの登場です。ただし、この円高の時期にあっても、価格は２万円を越えます。私は仕事柄仕方なく購入しましたが、このシリーズは２年たったらほぼ間違いなくペーパーが出るので、お金のない方はそれまで待ち、まず図書館に入れてもらいましょう。

ベテランから新人まで、よくも集めたというくらいの執筆者数である。じつは、各章は、モノによってはさらに細分化されたものもあり、６０人といったところか。ウェブに目次がなかったので、全部手打ち。さすがに疲れた。北欧に詳しいものがこの執筆者を見てまず気づくのは、ピーター・ソーヤーが名前を連ねてないこと。1964年に『ヴァイキングの時代』の初版で衝撃を与えて以来、世界のヴァイキング研究の領袖であり続けたソーヤーも、引退し、完全に世代は変わったということであろうか。ブリンクの序文は「ブリテン諸島から見たヴァイキング研究」についての批判からはじまるが、ソーヤーを意識しているのかもしれない。

ともかく、本書の登場で、ヴァイキング世界の理解は格段に高まる。ついでに言えば、講義ノートも作りやすくなる。本来は自国語でしか書かないスカンディナヴィア内部の研究者が英語で寄稿しているため、最新の研究状況を共有できる。最新、と書いたが、すでに勉強をやめたのではないかと思しき超ベテランもいるので、その部分は最新じゃないかな。特に第三部の王国形成は、クラーク、ロエスダール、リンドクヴィストと、もういいでしょという面子である。これとおなじじゃねーか。しかし実のところ、北欧の内部に他に書き手がいるわけではない。私の知る限り、それぞれは後継者をもっているわけでもない。これは恐るべきことで、日本で言えば、平安時代史をかける人がいないということに匹敵する。国家の危機でしょう。

編者のステファン・ブリンクは、一人で何本も原稿を抱え、よくがんばっている。しかし、私はどうも彼の分析がザルに見えて仕方がない。ルーン石碑を使うのはいいんだけど、本来考古学畑のヒトであるため、精度が甘いのである。地域観念、法、奴隷といった、とても大事な問題を論じてはいるのだけど。

去年、私のイギリスでの発表を聞きにきてくれたデンマークの友人も執筆している。私とほとんど同い年だったが、多分本書の執筆者で、最年少か。ささやかながら、これにも書いている。ロエスダールの愛弟子だが、今後、ヴァイキング時代経済史の牽引者となるだろう。
