今日オフィスに届いた。今年、私にとって最も重要な本。ぱらっとみた感じでは、たぶん私の議論とは被らないので、ほっとした。ともかく熟読せねばならない。

注目すべきは第５章。ノーサンブリア＋いわゆるケルティック・フリンジ。ウェセックス王の力が及ばなかったこの辺縁に、クヌートがどう介入したかがポイント。このあたりについてはすでに論文レベルで研究はあるのだが、全体をどうとらえるかという点にはいたっていなかった。スコットランドのマクベス（シェークスピアのマクベスですよ）が臣従したのも、クヌートの時代。イングランド史ではなくブリテン史という枠組みにたつと、クヌートの位置はいっそう鮮やかに浮き立つ。

ボルトンはおそらく３０台前半だと思うが、サイモン・ケインズの弟子。今はサザビーズの写本部門に勤務する。日本も職がない職がないというが、ヨーロッパはその比ではない。ＭＩＴの教授が「ヨーロッパはクレージーだ」と言っていた。ボルトンが北欧で世話になった先生が、ニルス・ロンとミケール・ゲルティング。私と共通する。ちなみにミケールの中学校のときの先生が、ニルス。大学は出たけど仕事がなかったとか言っていたが、そう考えるとニルスはずいぶんえらくなったものだ。６月でコペンも退官だけど。

クヌートは、その名ばかり高く、研究は少ない。個人に焦点を絞ったものは、1912年のラーソンの伝記（ラーソン自身の興味深い生涯については、ここ）、1993年のローソンの伝記、翌年のランブルが編んだ論集に限られる。イングランド、デンマーク、ノルウェーの三国の長となった割には、お寒い結果である。とはいえ、実のところ、アルフレッド大王やウィリアム征服王も、きちんとした伝記はない。皆、英雄伝にしり込みするのだろうか。資料がありすぎる、ということではないと思うが。

さすがブリル殿下。この円安にあって、２００００円を切りません。いったい何部刷ってんのかねえ。
